ABOUT ME
I have always had a particular affinity for dogs. My husband,
Peter, and I currently share our lives
with 9 dogs (photos of some of
them are shown within this website). We also have a horse, a donkey,
2 cats, several chinchillas, lots of chooks, 2 pigs, a variety of birds and a few fish.
For several years I was an instructor and committee member with the Wairarapa Dog Obedience Club, Clareville, Carterton. I also spent two years working as a full-time volunteer at the Wairarapa Branch of the RNZSPCA in the roles of Animal Welfare Inspector and Dog Compound Manager.
I completed the Massey University course Principles of Canine Behaviour in 1999. I also gained a National Certificate: Animal and Regulatory Control (Animal Welfare) and a Certificate in Animal Welfare Investigations during my time with the Wairarapa SPCA.
Over recent years I have attended several seminars presented by visiting overseas experts, including Suzanne Clothier, Kay Laurence, Turid Rugaas, Susan Garrett, Pat Hastings, Dr Jean Dodds, Sheila Harper, Anne Lill Kvam, Dr Ian Dunbar, Dr Susan Friedman, and Mary Ray.
I have amassed an extensive and comprehensive book, video, and DVD library on all aspects of dog care, behaviour, and training. I also endeavour to keep myself abreast of modern scientific knowledge about learning, behaviour, and training via email groups and websites devoted to exploring positive methods of interacting with our canine companions.
The emphasis I place on pain-free training methods means I do not use equipment such as choke chains or electronic collars. Instead, I rely on positive reinforcement to strengthen desirable behaviours, plus management, prevention, and training to curtail undesirable behaviours.
